Executive Council Volunteer Opportunities

The Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities (MLPD) is a provincial not-for-profit organization that promotes accessibility and inclusion for people of all abilities. We are a diverse group of experienced and influential advocates who educate and offer expert advice on a wide range of accessibility topics and issues. As a cornerstone of Manitoba’s social justice community, we have proudly represented Manitobans with disabilities and gifts since 1974.

The MLPD Provincial Council invites applications for three (3) Executive Council positions:

By joining the Executive Council of MLPD, you will contribute to a critical social justice cause and gain unique opportunities to develop your leadership and advocacy skills. As a part of an organization at the forefront of Manitoba’s accessibility movement, you will be well-positioned to expand your professional network through leadership opportunities that connect you with provincial and municipal political leaders, key Manitoba business professionals, and social justice trailblazers from across Canada.

Council terms are a three (3) year commitment. Meetings are held virtually, with some hybrid meetings occurring a few times a year.

As an organization focused on amplifying marginalized voices across Manitoba, applicants meeting the following criteria are preferred:

  • Identifying as a person with lived experience with disability or gifts either personally, as a caregiver, or as a family member providing care and support
  • Identifying as a person of colour or Indigenous
  • Residing outside of the greater Winnipeg area

TREASURER

We are seeking a treasurer with a strong background in finance or accounting, a leader who can effectively manage the Council’s financial obligations, and support the Council’s decision-making by effectively and accurately communicating financial information. The right candidate is comfortable working as part of a team, is knowledgeable about non-profit financial reporting requirements, and possesses experience administering operational budgets. Experience in non-profit fundraising is an asset. The time commitment for this role is approximately five (5) hours per month.

  • Provides leadership on the Council as a member of the Executive Council
  • Supports the executive director in the management of MLPD’s financial accounts, accounting processes, annual audit process, financial reporting, and in the development and administration of MLPD’s budget
  • Presenting monthly financial reports to the Council
  • Attending monthly executive council committee meetings and monthly council meetings

SECRETARY

We are seeking a secretary with a strong administrative background, a leader who can communicate with tact and diplomacy, is adept at producing official correspondence, and has superior organizational skills. The right candidate is comfortable working collaboratively as part of a team, has experience managing documents and files, and is well-versed in the MS Office Suite and virtual meeting platforms. Experience organizing events and non-profit fundraising is an asset. The time commitment for this role is approximately five (5) hours per month.

  • Provides administrative support to the Council Chair
  • Provides leadership on the Council as a member of the Executive Council
  • Supports the functions of the Council by producing meeting minutes, distributing and managing council documents, tracking various information, managing council correspondence and various other administrative duties
  • Attends monthly executive council committee meetings and monthly council meetings.

VICE-CHAIR

We are seeking a vice-chair who possesses strong leadership acumen and experience in either a professional capacity or as a volunteer board member. The right candidate is an advocacy guru whose leadership approach empowers and inspires people to work collaboratively. They are comfortable working as part of a team, are knowledgeable about non-profit and social enterprise management best practices, and hold fundraising experience. The time commitment for this role is approximately ten (10) hours per month.

  • Provides leadership on the Council as a member of the Executive Council
  • Acts as the Council Chair in the event of the Chair’s absence
  • Works collaboratively with the Chair to ensure that the Council functions effectively and meets its oversight obligations
  • Provides leadership of the Council’s fundraising activities
  • Supports the Chair and Executive Director in coordinating the Council’s affairs and ensuring effective relations with the MLPD staff and members, the public, and other community stakeholders.
  • Attends community events and engages in community-building activities across Manitoba
  • Attends monthly executive council committee meetings and monthly council meetings

The following qualifications are considered assets for all of the positions above:

  • Experience and knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) best practices and leadership
  • Experience and knowledge of the principles of reconciliation, including implementing anti-racism and decolonization practices and implementing the TRC’s Call to Acton 92
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and communities, including knowledge of Indigenous worldviews
